Netted Upstream

It was the perfect day for a trip to Castlewood - sunshine, blue skies, a light breeze. The boys were hoping to hang out by the river and play in the sand. Conquer Castlewood filled the park with a great number of runners, bikers, and boaters, and thus changed our plans. We headed for the creek rather than the river. Our creek explorations took us upstream this visit, and we ventured further than ever.

As we were getting ready to head back downstream, we discovered a small muddy pool of water. The boys noticed many tiny minnows in the pool, and we also spotted what we believed was a bullfrog tadpole. Each time we move along the side of the pool, he scurried to hide in the mud. With no access to the creek, the critter was essentially trapped making it rather easy to catch him with our net.

We quickly realized it was not a bullfrog tadpole, but possibly some species of minnow. The boys built a ring of rocks as the fish's home, and filled it with water.

When his home was "just perfect," he moved in.

The boys spent time observing and examining the fish before releasing it back to the creek.

After doing a bit of research online back home, we learned that what we caught was actually a white sucker - a small fish commonly found in creeks.
